By Sade Richardshon Thursday, April 11, 2024

Join us as we dive into the world of Rachel Kane, Professor of Practice at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University. Beyond her impressive professional journey, we get a glimpse into the personal side of Rachel through a series of intriguing Q&A questions.

What’s one item you can’t live without?
A good pen. I still take notes by hand, in cursive, much to the shock and amazement of my Gen Z students.

What do you love most about your industry?
It's always changing and I find a ton of entertainment and stimulation in making predictions about how the media will move.

How long have you been a member of the NABJLA? What’s your favorite part?
I gifted myself a membership the day after my birthday on 8/21/23. I admire how events and announcements from NABJLA always have an element of service binding them.

What's a project or award you're really proud of? Tell us about it!
I worked with my incredible Executive Producer at BET, Timiza Sanyika, on a series called, "I Was a Soul Train Dancer," which explored the history and told the stories of the talented people who made the Soul Train line iconic. The series has accumulated millions of views and won a few Telly Awards.

How can we get in contact with you? Social media?

I'm a social media minimalist and college professor who took on a big, exploitative fashion brand in a very public brawl once upon a time, so I keep my circle tight. You can find me on IG and LinkedIn.

Any concluding remarks?
Thank you for all you do! I'm currently looking for internship opportunities and experiences to offer students who spend a semester in LA creating content in the studio. If anyone would like to chat about adding a roster of intelligent, focused, creative college journalists and communications scholars to their initiatives, please reach out.
