Mike W. Terry

Mike W. Terry

Work/Occupation:

Sportswriter (most of the time). I have worked for Soul magazine (jazz writer), San Bernardino Sun, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and still do contract work for the San Fernando Valley Sun/El Sol.

Years involved with NABJLA and NABJ?

I joined the national NABJ in 1988, and NABJLA when it was formed (can't remember the year, getting old sucks).

What is your favorite quote? I have two favorite quotes, both from my late father, Frank Terry. "Don't shoot cannons at fleas"; if you're going to be angry, make sure that anger is worthy. And "It's nice to be important, but more important to be nice."

What is your favorite way to give back?

I love helping other people get book deals. There are so many talented writers out there who just need a little insight and support to become published authors! I'm proud to say that since my October NABJLA book publishing workshop, I've mentored and advised a handful of Black folks who collectively have sold book deals worth nearly a half million dollars in advances in multiple genres, from self-help to children's books.

What made you want to pursue your career?
[I knew that] being a journalist would allow me to go where no Black female had gone before and write stories so that younger Black writers would be inspired to do the same. There was a time when I was between journalism jobs and instead of whining, I went to London, jumped a ferry to France, tracked down the famous James Baldwin and interviewed him while he and his boyfriend took me on a midnight tour of Paris museums. No other field than journalism allows one to create a marketable article with nothing more than paper, pencil, gumption and gumshoe.

What type of stories need more attention in journalism?
Part of my personal mission at Pride Media is to uplift Black people, and not just our stories of tragedy and trauma that seem to be the only thing people click on these days. When I was young, fear prevented me from even pursuing avenues or opportunities that I assumed people who looked like me had no chance for. I think we need more stories in the world celebrating our wins, honoring Black doers, creators, and artists, and showing young Black people that anything is possible.
