Associate Director, Employee Experience and People Operations

At REDF, we’re building an economy that works. For everyone.

We discover and back social entrepreneurs and leaders across the United States that employ people striving to overcome employment barriers like homelessness or incarceration.

These mission-driven businesses, called employment social enterprises, value the untapped talent in their communities for the strengths they hold, not the barriers they’ve faced.

That’s why REDF invests in their businesses, so we can help push their impact further, faster. We pair our grantmaking with capacity-building support, create space for employment social enterprise leaders to learn together, and sponsor state and federal policies that help shift perspectives. Because we believe that our economy works best when it works for everyone.

Since 1997, REDF has invested in over 360 social enterprises in 44 states and DC, which have generated over $3.1 billion in revenue and employed more than 157,000 people.

The Role:

As Associate Director, Employee Experience and People Operations you will be responsible for providing strategic and operational management to recruit, develop and sustain a passionate, innovative and collaborative team of highly motived professionals. You will own the entire employee lifecycle with a strong focus on employee experience, operational efficiency, and culture-building. You will own, improve and optimize our core HR systems, including leveraging the analytics they enable. You’ll partner closely with leadership to ensure our people strategies align with our business goals.

You will manage a team of two professionals — a Senior Associate of Talent Management, and a Senior Manager of Performance Management and Professional Development — providing vision, leadership, communication, and project management, and supporting their continuous development. At the same time, you will be a hands-on and tactical doer, capable of multi-tasking and rolling up your sleeves to deliver work across multiple priorities, on time and of high quality.

This role requires exceptional interpersonal skills, strong analytical chops, and a familiarity with and proclivity for systems and operations. You’ll be responsible for partnering with REDF staff across the organization, leveraging deep knowledge of HR regulations and best practices, to champion culture and performance. You’ll provide incisive analytics to inform data-driven decision-making. You’ll be responsible for designing, managing, and integrating HR systems that support scalable operations, provide relevant and quality data, and improve the employee experience.

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced HR leader who thrives at the intersection of strategy, systems and people — someone who wants to help build a future-forward organization grounded in purpose, equity and operational excellence.

The Responsibilities:

·       Partner with REDF leadership to drive talent acquisition (including outreach, recruiting and hiring decisions), people systems (including compensation and benefits), talent development (including training, rewards and recognition) and talent management (including performance management and employee relations)

Employee Operations:

·       Own and lead the entire people experience, including recruiting, onboarding, professional development, performance management, compensation, benefits, and offboarding

About the L.A. Local News Initiative

Founded in 2024, the L.A. Local News Initiative is a coalition of organizations and philanthropists that have come together to support local news in L.A.. Guided by a community listening effort that included input from nearly 900 L.A. residents, this coalition represents a groundbreaking effort by philanthropy, media, and community organizations in L.A. to work together to fill information gaps, strengthen local democracy and make L.A. work better for Angelenos.

With over $17 million raised so far, the new initiative will take a multi-pronged ecosystem approach to ensure all L.A. communities have free access to the information they need to be more civically engaged, to thrive and to hold decision makers accountable:

  • It is investing in expansion of a community-centered, hyperlocal model developed by Boyle Heights Beat, a trusted newsroom serving Boyle Heights and East L.A., so that more communities in L.A. can get quality, independent news relevant to their neighborhoods, produced by people who are rooted in their communities.

  • It will facilitate investments to add reporting resources in the region through investments in regionwide beats and state government reporting from the perspective of Los Angeles at LAist and CalMatters, made available to ecosystem partners, and continue to rally philanthropy to advance local news as a mechanism for civic engagement

  • It will foster collaboration among ecosystem partners, by coordinating content sharing, and providing shared resources that will help existing news outlets in L.A. do more reporting and bring more journalism to more people

These strategies were formed following extensive research and community listening done in partnership between local civic leaders and the American Journalism Project, which included input from nearly 900 Angelenos spanning a wide range of ages, genders, races, ethnicities, incomes, professions, and neighborhoods.

Editor, Community, Culture & Arts

The organization

The Los Angeles Local News Initiative is a nonprofit startup dedicated to revitalizing local journalism in Los Angeles. We're building a new model for community-focused news that connects neighborhood-level reporting with broader regional issues. Our approach combines dedicated community newsrooms with a central hub that amplifies local stories, identifies cross-community trends, and produces region-wide coverage that matters to all Angelenos.

Our values

Free, Independent Local Press: We believe all Angelenos deserve to have a source of unbiased information that equips them to thrive in their daily lives. Our work will meet high journalism standards, be independent, non-partisan, and free to access. We’ll prioritize reaching as many Angelenos as possible, in the most effective ways possible.

Community-first: We center the needs of local communities, with an ultimate goal to strengthen communities and make LA work better for Angelenos. Journalism should be focused on serving people most affected by the subject matter, and equipping them to take action.

Equity & Inclusion: We need a representative, equitable, and inclusive local press. Newsrooms should be representative of the communities they cover, shift narratives to be centered on community perspectives, and provide pathways into newsgathering for residents.

Trust: We believe that building trust must be a core principle of our journalism. As a baseline, the journalism we support must be accurate, independent, unbiased, non-partisan, and a trusted source of shared facts by the communities we serve.

The Role

We're seeking a dynamic Community, Culture and Arts Editor to capture the pulse of Los Angeles, a city where global cultures converge and creative movements are born. You'll be our cultural compass, guiding Angelenos beyond their familiar neighborhoods to discover the artists, flavors, and experiences that make LA unlike anywhere else on earth. Coverage may span arts, food, religion, wellness, community identity, and sports.

The ideal candidate has an instinct for spotting tomorrow's trends today-whether it's a new wave of Salvadoran-Korean fusion cuisine or a street art movement that could only flourish under LA's endless sunshine. This is more than cultural reporting; it's about revealing how LA's unique geography, history, and demographic tapestry foster a creative ecosystem that exists nowhere else.

The editor will build up a strong network of freelance reporters, commission and edit stories across a range of topics, from profiles of emerging artists and new exhibitions, to reviews of the local theater scene. While the stories will be grounded at the neighborhood level, they will speak to residents across the region who view the city’s diversity as our largest asset.

We’re looking for an experienced journalist who is wired into the local community, arts and culture scene and understands how to reach people where they are at, whether online, on social media, or in person. The editor will have specialized support in multimedia production, social media strategy, and other centralized functions to bring these stories to life.

Responsibilities

  • Cultivate, support and build a network of community/freelance reporters and influencers.

  • Ensure a steady cadence of daily and weekly community, arts and culture coverage.

  • Plan daily and long-term coverage in coordination with the Managing Editor, Neighborhoods and Managing Editor, Central Support and Partnerships. Help maintain editorial calendars for three local publications.

  • Collaborate with editorial partners on stories, content sharing and events.

  • Edit web stories, newsletters and other content and ensure they are reflective of the voice and tone in our strategy, and meet consistent, high standards.

  • Collaborate with others across the newsroom to identify and execute impactful community-focused journalism that highlights LA’s arts and culture scene.

  • While the primary focus will be editing, the editor should be comfortable reporting and writing articles from time to time as needed.

  • Through consistent leadership, foster a creative, learning-oriented and productive work environment where journalists of all levels and backgrounds, including high school reporters, can develop their skills.

  • Understand and integrate our promise to practice diversity, equity, and inclusion in how we assign, report, edit, produce, and distribute our journalism.

  • Represent the newsroom internally and externally.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Strong experience in daily journalism; three years editing or equivalent experience, including experience managing the work of others.

  • Experience reporting or editing in Southern California.

  • Experience in maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance, and fairness.

  • Some experience providing work direction or supervisory experience.

  • Experience assigning stories and editing copy.

  • Experience with digital news production and presentation.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Strong news judgment

  • Strong writing and editing essential

  • Demonstrated digital production skills

  • Strong visual storytelling skills, with the ability to optimize content for multiple platforms (web, social, video, and emerging formats)

  • Ability to make decisions on deadline, direct coverage and communicate effectively with colleagues and supervisors

  • Ability to handle multiple assignments on deadline

  • Strong leadership and personnel skills

  • A commitment to principles of diversity, equity and inclusion

  • Demonstrated ability to report with cultural awareness and sensitivity, navigating complex social and cultural issues with nuance, insight, and professionalism.

Tell the Stories That Shape Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Local News Initiative is reimagining local journalism for our sprawling metropolis. We're building something different; a new model that connects neighborhood-level reporting with the bigger picture issues that affect all Angelenos.

We're currently focusing on seven key communities: Koreatown, Pico-Union, Westlake, South L.A., Inglewood, Boyle Heights and East L.A. (The LA Local News Initiative integrated the Boyle Heights Beat into our organization last year. Check out their archive to see our approach in action.) We’re building dedicated community newsrooms with a central hub that amplifies local stories, identifies trends across neighborhoods, and produces region-wide coverage that truly matters to the people who call L.A. home.

We're seeking passionate storytellers and intrepid freelance reporters ready to illuminate the heartbeat of Los Angeles—one neighborhood at a time. We’re looking for multimedia stories that don't just inform, but empower: narratives that unlock solutions to the challenges Angelenos face, and elevate the vibrancy of life in our sprawling metropolis.

The Role

What We're Looking For

COMMUNITY POWER

  • Profiles that reveal influence: Who really shapes your neighborhood? The longtime resident organizing tenants, the small business owner anchoring a block, the community leader fighting for resources

  • Cultural institutions as community anchors: How does that community center, corner market, or weekly gathering space actually serve its neighborhood?

  • Innovation from necessity: What creative solutions are residents developing to address local challenges?

ACCOUNTABILITY IN ACTION

  • Promises vs. reality: What happened to those commitments elected officials made? How is that new development actually affecting daily life?

  • Systems under pressure: How are ICE enforcement actions rippling through local economies and healthcare? What are the long-term impacts of January's wildfires on rebuilding and disaster preparedness?

  • Development's double edge: Who benefits when neighborhoods change, and who bears the cost?

PRACTICAL POWER

  • Navigate LA: Accessible guides to childcare, healthcare, cultural offerings—the resources that make city life livable

  • Democracy demystified: Break down ballot measures, city processes, and policy changes in language that empowers residents

  • Know your rights: Practical resources that help people access services and advocate for themselves

CROSS-COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

  • Similar challenges, different solutions: How are various neighborhoods tackling housing, transit, gentrification, climate change? What can they learn from each other?

  • Regional trends, local impact: Show how citywide forces play out differently across communities

  • Solutions that scale: Highlight innovations from one neighborhood that could transform others

Our Commitment to You

We pay freelancers fairly and work to amplify voices traditionally excluded from LA media coverage. We're seeking both one-time contributors and ongoing collaborators ready to build something new with us.

Ready to pitch?

Send us your story ideas and 2-3 recent samples to pitches@localnewsforla.org. We aim to respond to every pitch, though please allow time for our small team to review thoughtfully.

We're especially interested in stories that amplify voices and perspectives often missing from traditional LA media coverage, and we're committed to paying freelancers fairly for their work.
